The Special Olympics of South Dakota State Cheer and Basketball Competitions were held in Mitchell from March 28- 29.  Over 600 athletes competed. Counting the athletes, coaches and volunteers, the total number of participants was over 1000. Many spectators also attended.

Congratulations goes to the Milbank Special Olympic teams, players, and cheerleaders. The cheerleaders earned first place in their division.

The adult team took fourth place in their division. The Schoolers also brought home a first-place, gold medal in their division.

Kaylee Torgerson, a member of the  Milbank Schoolers, received the 2026 Spirit-Sportsmanship Award for school age participants.

Briar Zuraff, a member of the Milbank adult team, also received the 2026 Spirit-Sportsmanship Award. “This is a great honor to have both of them on the Milbank team,” commented Peggy Greiner, special services secretary.

The two-day tournament started with an opening ceremony at  Mitchell High School. Basketball clinics, tournament games, the cheerleading clinics and cheerleading competitions were held at Dakota Wesleyan University’s Avera Sports & Wellness complex, Christen Athletic Center, and Mitchell High School. An evening dance was also hosted for the athletes.

“All athletes, coaches and parents had a great time. Milbank was represented well and  I heard many comments that our athletes show great sportsmanship and respect for others,” said Greiner. “It is always nice to hear this from other communities. Great job athletes!”
