Mindy Rogers, a member of the Milbank City Council, got started on the right foot today. Rogers joined kids, parents, and staff who took to the streets to celebrate National Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, October 9. The event will continue all this week. National Honor Society students from MHS are also taking a stand and serving as crossing guards before and after school. Look for them at the crossing from Hurley Park to the elementary school and also at the crosswalk on Ninth Street near the water tower.
If you grew up in the olden days when walking or riding your bike to school with other neighbor kids was pretty common, then you might be surprised to learn that in 1969, 48 percent of students in the U.S. walked or cycled to school. In 2021, that figure had dropped to 11 percent. The Bike, Walk, and Roll to School Day hopes to turn those numbers upside down or at least make them do a wheelie.
National organizers claim the week-long Bike, Walk, or Roll to School event is an easy way for students and families to try walking, bicycling, and rolling to school with little commitment. “You might be surprised at how little time it takes and how much everyone enjoys it.”
Of course, it is not feasible for some children to hoof it to class, so Milbank’s PPE is also sending log sheets home with students to record their other outside activities. Kids who spend time outdoors, fill out a sheet, and get it signed by a parent will be entered in a drawing for prizes. Winners will be selected on Friday, October 11.
If keeping your loafers firmly planted on your gas pedal this week is more your speed, ease up a little and stay on the lookout for increased foot and bicycle traffic. Or switch gears and join the movement.
