Groceries for Vets is holding a special giveaway on Thursday, Nov 13, in Milbank. The event starts at 8 a.m. at Berens Market. Bob Frink, who has been spearheading the giveaways, says, “We’ll have eighty $50-boxes of groceries. Plus, each box will contain a one-pound block of cheese from Valley Queen.” Veterans should take note, though. “When the boxes are gone, they’re gone,” he cautions.
The giveaway will also provide a frozen Thanksgiving meal for each veteran. Frink says he approached Deb Bowsher about making the meals, and she put out a call to the community to fund the project. Bowsher called him the next day to say the community had stepped up to fund the meals in less than three hours! Frink says, “The generosity of people in Milbank and the surrounding area is amazing.”
The Big Stone American Legion Auxiliary Post 229 will be hosting their first Groceries for Vets giveaway in Ortonville. The giveaway will be held at Hartman’s Supervalu on Thursday, November 13. It begins at 8 a.m. The Ortonville event will offer 30 boxes. A frozen Thanksgiving dinner will also be included with each box.
The Groceries for Vets program is catching on in other counties in South Dakota, too. Members of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 1054 have been helping veterans groups, grocery stores, and local businesses partner to give away boxes of groceries in Clear Lake, Webster, Willow Lake, and Sisseton.
