“I was so impressed by the student turnout and the strong tradition of blood donation at Milbank High School,” said Abbie Arneson, territory representative for LifeServe Blood Center. “The leadership of Janelle Korstjens and the dedication of both students and faculty made this first drive with LifeServe an incredible success. Their enthusiasm and teamwork truly reflect the spirit of the Milbank community.”
The event at MHS on Monday, November 3, was the school’s first blood drive with LifeServe Blood Center since LifeServe became the sole blood provider to Milbank Area Hospital Avera in December 2024.
”Even more impressive,” Arneson said, “the school’s participation far exceeds national averages.” She noted, “Across the country, less than three percent of the population donates blood, yet Milbank High School students continue to show that the next generation is ready to step up and make a difference.”
LifeServe recognizes high school seniors with its Donor of Distinction Award. Students who donate blood three times before graduation, or who help recruit family members or friends to reach a combined total of three donations, will earn a red honor cord to wear at graduation.
LifeServe Blood Center now provides blood to over 175 hospitals across South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska. “Every unit collected locally helps patients right here in the region,” Arneson stated.
Donors who previously gave blood through another organization can transfer their donation history to LifeServe, to ensure their lifetime totals and milestone recognitions continue seamlessly. The process is quick and easy at:

If you missed the Milbank High School drive, LifeServe will be back on Thursday, December 11, from Noon–5:30 p.m. at the Grant County 4-H Building.
