Milbank dug in their heels to defeat the Quarriers of Dell Rapids at home on Saturday December 13. It was a nail-biting start to their 2025-26 basketball season. The game, like the Energizer Bunny, kept going and going. The Bulldogs finally emerged victorious 74-72 at the end of the second OT. After the game, head coach Logan Diede commented, “I was proud of how our boys never gave up and kept battling. In a double overtime game, that is crucial if you want to come out on top!”
At one point in the second quarter, Dell Rapids led by 11 points, but Milbank cut the deficit to six just before halftime. They outscored the Quarriers 17-11 in the third. As the clock wound down in the fourth, Milbank trailed by three and it looked like the Bulldogs were doomed. But in an epic comeback, senior Lincoln Holscher nailed a three-point dagger at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime.
Holscher had a big night. He poured in 20 points and pulled off two steals. He tied with Camden Jones of Dell Rapids for a game-high nine rebounds. Holscher also was perfect at the line – going six for six. “Lincoln had to battle through first-half foul trouble and came up huge for us down the stretch with his scoring and rebounding,” Diede said.
Jeter Scoular also ramped up the excitement in the Armory when he rolled into the paint for a layup that sent the game into 2OT. Scoular, a junior, finished with 14 points, including two triples, along with two assists and four rebounds.
According to Diede, sophomore Emmett Snaza “had a huge night off the bench.” He scored 12 points, including two three-pointers, and secured seven boards. Junior Sam Rick and seniors Ryan Keeton, and Layten Osowski each rallied for eight points. Rick added an assist and five rebounds. Keeton made two assists and pulled down seven rebounds. Osowski grabbed five rebounds, hit both his free throws, and executed a steal. Braylen Bowsher, also a senior, knocked down a triple and a free throw and contributed two assists.
“Almost all of our guys on the floor had limited varsity playing experience last season, and one of our top defenders (senior Jack Howard) was out with an ankle injury – so it was a huge test out of the gates for our boys,” explained Diede. “I thought our boys really competed! ”
The Bulldogs hit 48 percent of their shots from the floor, including in OT. They downed nearly 24 percent from beyond the arc. As a team, they collected 74 percent from the line.
If the Bulldogs showed a weak spot, it was when they struggled to control the ball. They recorded twice as many turnovers as the Quarriers. “We will definitely need to clean up a lot of things as we move forward throughout the season – particularly minimizing turnovers –as does every team early in a new season,” Diede noted. “And we will!”
Karson Paye racked up 22 points for Dell Rapids. Camden Jones scored 15. Jackson Peppel added 14. Peppel followed Jones with six rebounds.
The Quarriers averaged 42 percent from the floor, including 33 percent from long range. They connected on 47 percent from the charity stripe.
Extended floor time contributed to several starters fouling out. Paye and Peppel were nicked for five and fouled out for Dell Rapids. Osowski and Snaza were forced to sit for Milbank.
