Allan Ross Cameron was born on October 26, 1931, in Ortonville, MN, to William and Eleanor (Heald) Cameron. He was baptized and confirmed at Wilmot Presbyterian Church in Wilmot, SD. Allan attended country school in Lake Township through the seventh grade before graduating from Wilmot High School in 1949. Even before high school was finished, Allan stepped in to take over the family farm when his father became ill. Farming wasn’t just his job, it was his way of life, and he continued working the family farm for many years to come.
On September 2, 1952, Allan married Mary Miller. Together they made their home in the Wilmot area. Mary and Allan had five children in eight years: Teri, Clay, Ryan, Wendy, and Kip. Shortly after their marriage, Allan was drafted into the United States Army, where he served as a helicopter mechanic. After being honorably discharged, he returned home and went right back to the farm, where he worked for 40 years as both a crop and dairy farmer. No matter how busy things were on the farm, Allan never missed a sporting, FFA, or 4-H event.
Allan retired from farming in 1991. He and Mary then moved to the lake, where they built and operated the Cameron Store for more than 20 years. They truly enjoyed running the store, especially visiting with locals and friends, it became just as much a gathering place as a business. The store’s unique hours were well known, and always part of its charm.
Allan and Mary loved playing cards and spending time at the lake. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, where he served as Master, and also belonged to the Wilmot American Legion Drake-Sorbel Post No. 64.
He is survived by his five children: Teri Trumble of Sioux Center, IA; Clay (Nadine) Cameron of Wilmot, SD; Ryan (Val) Cameron of Milbank, SD; Wendy (Alan) Rowland of Browns Valley, MN; and Kip (Tina) Cameron of Wilmot, SD; along with 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
Allan was preceded in death by his parents: William and Eleanor Cameron; beloved wife, Mary Cameron; brother, Douglas “Doc” Cameron; and great-grandson, Wyatt Rowland.
