Lady Bulldogs Demolish Deuel 60-22

When the Lady Bulldogs get in their groove, they function like a well-oiled machine. Milbank’s defense shut down the Lady Cardinals, and senior center Anna Neugebauer, assisted by her teammates, racked up 18 points to overwhelm Deuel in a 60-22 victory in Clear Lake on Thursday, January 29.
Susie Schuneman got the tip for Milbank, and she got the ball to Belle Paulli, but Pauli’s shot was partially blocked by Alayna Carlson of Deuel. On the toss-in, Pauli got the ball again and knocked in a two to get the Lady Bulldogs on the board first at 2-0. After the rebound, Avery Schuneman pulled off a steal, and her basket hit the backboard, but refused to go in. Both teams attempted several shots, but nothing would fall. Neither team had found their rhythm.
Deuel’s Camdyn Peterreins was caught traveling, and the Lady Bulldogs got the ball, but Milbank’s shot and two putbacks wouldn’t go in. Neugebauer, however, drew the foul, and she went to the line to shoot two. Her first attempt fell short, but the second swished through to get the Lady Bulldogs to 3-0. The ball then got loose, and Deuel came up with it. B. Pauli also picked up her first foul. On the inbounds play, Milbank got a steal and A. Schuneman made a fast break to take it all the way to the rim. Milbank moved ahead 5-0. The Lady Bulldogs pulled off another steal, and S. Schuneman sent the ball to A. Schuneman for a quick bucket that put Milbank up 7-zip.
At the four-minute mark, Lady Cardinal Graclyn Nielsen appeared to be injured and a timeout was taken. Peterreins then received the ball in bounds and ventured a 3-pointer, but it was no good. Milbank’s Bree Townsend picked up a foul on the rebound. When B. Pauli missed her next shot, Townsend got the putback and pushed the score to 9-0. Deuel then missed a 3-ball, and Townsend rebounded to get it to A. Schuneman. She was more than happy to demonstrate how it’s done, and Milbank went ahead 12-0.
Sophie Trupe got the Cardinals fired up when she downed a 3-pointer to finally get Deuel on the board at 12-3. A. Schuneman then shoveled a pass to Neugebauer. She put it up and in for two to put the score at 14-3. Milbank got a steal, but missed their shot. Pauli also picked up her second personal foul.
Deuel got the ball, but A. Schuneman took it away. Nielsen then knocked it away from the Lady Bulldogs, but S. Schuneman drew a foul. Milbank got the ball to Neugebauer again, and she put it in to take the score to 16-3. Nielsen was suddenly feeling it from downtown, and she launched a 3-pointer to get Deuel’s total to six points in the first quarter. Milbank continued to work the A. Schuneman to Neugebauer connection, and they netted two more points before the quarter ended at 18-6.
The second quarter started with a lot of activity, but no points scored until Neugebauer twirled through the lane to put the ball up and in for her ninth point of the game. Milbank was up 20-6 when Peterreins aimed a jumper that was no good, but she followed up to finish the job. The score went to 20-8. A. Schuneman again sent mail to Neugebauer and she dropped it off for two points. Carlson replied with a basket for Deuel. The scoreboard showed 22-10.
Neugebauer added another two from underneath–her 13th point of the night. Deuel then sent the ball sailing out of bounds, and the Bulldogs made them pay. Townsend sank a triple to up the score to 27-10 with five minutes remaining in the half. Deuel then took their time looking for a shot, but Milbank’s D made sure they took too long, and Ember Morris’ basket was no good just before the shot clock expired. B. Pauli, all alone in transition, got a bucket to put Milbank further ahead at 29-10. Lydia Gall, who had just entered the game, fired a three from the corner, and the Lady Bulldogs jumped ahead 32-10. Peterreins downed a basket to get Deuel to 32-12. Milbank then got the ball, but turned it over.
An actual shot clock violation meant Deuel came up empty-handed again. Pauli also missed her shot, but she was fouled and stepped to the line. Both free throws were good, and Milbank went ahead 34-12. With under a minute to go in the half, A. Schuneman dished the ball back to Pauli, who took it up and in to score the last two points of the half. Milbank led 36-12.
In the third quarter, Peterreins went to the line for the Cardinals’ first opportunity at the stripe. Peterreins hit the front side of two, but missed the back. The score read 36-13. A. Schuneman downed a 3-pointer from the left wing to bump MIlbank up to 39-13 with 6:34 remaining. The Lady Bulldogs again applied pressure and the Cardinals struggled, but were slapped with another shot clock violation for turnover number 14. With 5:27 on the clock, S. Schuneman hit a triple to get Milbank to 42-13. At 3:56, Townsend took advantage of a fast break to get the score to 44-13. Her basket gave Milbank a 30-point lead and the Mercy Rule set the continuous clock in motion.
Neugebauer fouled Nielsen, who went to the line to shoot two. She collected one to get Deuel to 44-14. A. Schuneman delivered another package to Neugebauer who powered in a shot to push Milbank to 46-14. Neugebauer went to the line to earn one. The score moved to 47-14. A. Schuneman again passed to Neugebauer,who nailed the shot to rack up her 18th point of the game. The Lady Bulldogs were ahead 49 -14.
Adison Pauli added a layup for the Lady Bulldogs who then led at 51-14. Theissen added a bucket for Deuel to move the score to 51-16 with 1:26 to go in the quarter. A. Pauli put up a basket that wouldn’t fall, but Gall tipped it in to collect two.The Bulldogs ended the third quarter ahead at 53-16.
With the clock continuing to run except for timeouts and free throws. The Lady Cardinals experienced more woes under the pressure of Milbank’s defense in the fourth quarter..Deuel committed a 5-second violation on a toss-in to mark their 20th turnover. Neugebauer blocked a shot – her second in the game – with just under four minutes to play. S. Schuneman added a bucket at 3:33 to put the score at 55-16 and Deuel began their substitutions. Nielsen, however, came up with a big 3-pointer to move the Cardinals a bit closer at 55-19. Milbank freshman Bailee Hendricks answered with a 3-pointer. The score sat at 58-19.
The Bulldogs got one last steal and S. Schuneman put it up off the glass and in to get the score to 60-19. With the clock ticking down to the final seconds, Nielsen stepped back and landed a perfect three before the buzzer to get the score to 60-22. But the Bulldogs were long gone. They took the “W” with them.
Neugebauer led all scorers with 20 points. A. Schuneman got into double figures with 10 points. B. Pauli made eight. S. Schuneman and Townsend each scored seven. Hendricks and Gall each put up three –both hit triples. A. Pauli added two points. A. Schuneman racked up eight assists. A. Pauli was next with three. S. Schuneman and B. Pauli had two apiece. Townsend added one.
Neugebauer hauled down nine rebounds and B. Pauli snagged seven. S.Schuneman, A. Schuneman, and Townsend each grabbed three. A. Pauli and Hendricks got one apiece.
Neugebauer made two blocks. A. Schuneman led the Lady Dawgs with four steals. B. Pauli and Neugebauer each made three. S. Schuneman got two.
The Lady Bulldogs scored on 52 percent of their shots from the floor. They made 30 percent from long range. Milbank hit four of five from the stripe for 80 percent.
For Deuel, Nielsen led the scoring with 10 points. She added two assists, three rebounds, and two steals. Peterreins made five points and seven rebounds. She had an assist and a block. Trupe made three points and a rebound. Theisen scored two points, two assists, two rebounds, and two steals. Carlson added two points and grabbed one rebound. Morris contributed two rebounds.
Deuel hit just 24 percent of their shots from the floor. The Lady Cardinals made 27 percent from beyond the arc. They received six chances at the line and made two.
