Bass Takes 16th at NEC Golf Tourney

Bulldog golfers traveled to Groton to compete in the NEC Tournament at Olive Grove Golf Course on Tuesday, August 25. Senior Thomas Bass just missed bringing home a  medal for taking 15th place. Bass and Isaiah Deutsch each carded 96, but  Deutsch won the tie breaker.

Bass took 16th place for Milbank. Seth VanHoorn was 19th. He shot  a 100.  Jaxson Bear carded 103 for 21st place. Jeryn Bormann was 24th at 110. Pierce Mathiason carded 116 for 26th place.

Lucas Daggett and Harper Schnabel, both of Roncalli, tied at 72 for the top spot, but Daggett won the playoff to earn the medalist honors. Jace Johnson of Groton was third at 73.  Luke Nielsen of Sisseton shot an 80 for fourth place.

Aberdeen Roncalli took first as a team. Sisseton was second. Groton secured third. Redfield was fourth. Milbank came in fifth place, and Tiospa Zina took sixth.

“It is golf! You are going to have bad shots,” said MHS head coach Mark Keeton. “But as a team, we need to work on not letting one poor shot turn into two.The scores might not show it at the moment, but I am seeing a lot of good shots every meet.” 

Dell Rapids
The Bulldogs had traveled to Dell Rapids the day before – August 24 – to play Rocky Run, an 18-hole championship course. Coach Keeton commented, “Dell Rapids was a tough test with many of the holes playing from the back tees. It was the first time our boys have seen Rocky Run, and Monday was all about learning the course.”

A shot for the highlight reel was when a Sisseton player claimed his first hole-in-one. “That’s pure excitement that you cannot replicate,” Keeton said.

Jeryn Bormann finished in 82nd place for Milbank. He shot a 99 at 28 over. Seth VanHoorn came in at No. 87 with 100 strokes. Pierce Mathiasson carded 105 for 93rd place. Thomas Bass shot a 107 for 95th. Jaxson Bear finished the course in 99th place.

Vermillion, Dakota Valley, and Aberdeen Roncalli were the top three teams, respectively. Harper Schnabel of Roncalli was the medalist at four under. Ben Akin of Elk Point-Jefferson took second place at one under. Jeran Carr of Vermillion was third at two over.
