Marlowe Vreim

Marlowe Vreim, 89, of Wilmot, SD, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at Wilmot Care Center in Wilmot. 

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Wilmot Lutheran Church in Wilmot. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday, October 2, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and will close with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday, one hour prior to the service. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Wilmot Lutheran Cemetery.

Marlowe Richard Vreim was born on October 12, 1936, in Wilmot, SD, to Oscar and Hannah (Hippen) Vreim. He grew up on the family farm northwest of town and attended Lee Township Country School, followed by Wilmot High School, graduating in 1955. After high school, while continuing to work on the farm, he joined the South Dakota Army National Guard. He served as an Artillery Gunner and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant during his enlistment.

On August 18, 1979, Marlowe married Rita Wittrock. Together, they farmed and made their home on the family place for 41 years, spending their retirement there until Rita’s passing in 2020.

A lifelong farmer and cattleman, Marlowe dedicated his life to agriculture and his community. He served 30 years on the board of the Wilmot Farmers Union Cooperative and 25 years as a Lee Township supervisor. Following his retirement from farming, he enjoyed driving a school bus for the Wilmot School District, covering a daily route for 10 years and accompanying countless FFA and sports trips. Marlowe was a faithful member of Wilmot Lutheran Church and served in numerous board roles throughout his life.

In his leisure time, Marlowe loved to hunt, fish, and trap. He was also an avid member of the Sons of Norway. One of his most treasured experiences was traveling to Norway with his wife and sisters to visit the original Vreim homestead and connect with Norwegian relatives.

Marlowe is survived by his sister, Norma (Wayne) Steinocker of Sioux Falls, SD; his stepchildren: Vicki (Sid) Munson of Tea, SD; Terry (Christie) Wittrock of Milbank, SD; Debra (Wayne) Tschetter of Huron, SD; Marty (Joyce) Wittrock of Wilmot, SD; and Tracy (Angela) Wittrock of Watertown, SD; 21 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita; his parents; his sister, Janice Vreim; stepson and daughter-in-law: Jerry and Debra Wittrock; stepdaughter and son-in-law: Julie and Reed Birney; son-in-law, Dwight Grant; grandson, Nickolas Wittrock; and one infant granddaughter.
