The annual cross country Border Battle – the Battle for the Paddle – was held in Grand Forks on Saturday, September 26. “This meet features primarily North Dakota and Minnesota teams – much different than our normal meets –. and it has gotten to be much more competitive over the years,” said Eric Townsend, head coach for Milbank. Overall, both teams had one of their best meets of the season against very good competition and a tough, wet, and muddy course. 

“Individually, we had five athletes earn  top-20 awards. Jeter Scoular placed fifth in the varsity boys race. Townsend also noted that Scoular’s time of 16:48 puts him at No. 2 in our top Milbank times at this meet, and Beckham Berry’s time of 19:12 puts him at No. 20.”. Finn Gilmore made the meet’s top 20 by placing 19th in the boys seventh-grade race.

Lady Bulldog Ella Koplin placed 13th in the varsity girls race. Kingsley Jensen took 10th for the seventh-grade girls.  Audrey Schmeichel placed 13th in the seventh-grade race. 

According to Townsend, Ella Koplin’s time of 19:51 puts her at  No. 3 in the top Milbank times at the Border Battle  meet.  Macy Mueller’s time of 20:29 tied her for No. 4.  Paola Culhuac Segundo’s time of 22:12 ties her for No. 13 for the Lady Bulldogs at the Border Battle. 

As a team, the seventh- grade girls placed seventh out of 20 complete teams. The eighth-grade girls placed ninth out of 19 complete teams. Milbank’s varsity boys placed 22nd as a team amongst 41 complete teams. 

What’s next? The Milbank cross country teams travel to the Lennox Invite on Friday October 2. The Bulldogs can look forward to an early trip as the start-time is 10 a.m.

Top Runners and Results for Milbank Varsity Boys: Senior Logan Wiehoff of Sauk Center won the race. His time was 15:49.7. Milbank senior Jeter Scoular took fifth place. He crossed the finish line  at 16:48.2. Senior Bulldog Beckham Berry was 105th at 19:12.4. Junior Franco Flores took 142nd at 19:40.6. Junior Rylan Wendland was 167th at 20:04.1 and Matt Unzen was 200th at XXXXXXX.

Top Runners and Results for Milbank Varsity Girls : Freshman Claire Grinde of Hillsboro/Central won the race. She did it in 17:55.1. Milbank sophomore  Ella Koplin took 13th place at 19:51.5. Senior Macy Mueller was 26th. She clocked in at 20:29.2. Freshman Paola Culhuac Segundo was 83rd at 22:12.6. Haylen Schneck, also a freshman, took 99th place at 22:38.5.

Quetzalli Culhuac Segundo took 53rd at 14.25.0.  Harmony Campbell brought home 56th place at 14:29.5. Brooklyn Eckberg was 91st at 16:04.4. Fernanda Hernandez Vasquez was 93rd at 16:09.2.
