The Milbank VFW Teener team used a powerful offense to capture the region baseball title and earn a berth to the state A tournament Friday at Legion Field.
Milbank defeated Groton 9-5 for the second time in the region tourney. The locals got out to a quick start with a 4-0 advantage after three innings of play. Mitch Quade belted out a solo home run in the third. Tanner Gauer pounded out a two-run home run in the fourth to widen the gap to 6-0. Milbank added three more runs in the fifth to go ahead 9-0.
Groton came back with one run in the sixth and four in the seventh, but the locals shut them down and held on for the win.
Gauer led Milbank with three hits, including a homer and a double, two runs, two stolen bases and four RBls. Quade finished the game with one hit, one run, a walk, stolen base and one RBI. Dylan Johnson followed with two hits, including a double, one run, one walk, a stolen base and one RBI while Jake Karges added a double, walk and three stolen bases.
Also contributing to the offense were Jonny Ash, a double hit and one run; Matt Lenards, one hit and one run; Taran Mogard, two hits, two runs and two stolen bases, and Cole Dockter. one hit, one run, one stolen base and one RBI.
Milbank will play in the state tournament August 7-9 in Humboldt. Game times have yet to be determined.
