JoAnn Helen Tietjen was born on the farm by Corona, SD, on January 28, 1931, to William and Mabel (Nordquist) Tietjen. She was baptized on March 8, 1931, by Rev. Haesner and confirmed on September 16, 1945, by Rev. L. K. Meyer, both in Corona at the Trinity Lutheran Church.

She attended Genesseo #5 for her first through eighth grades, then graduated from Milbank High School in 1949.

JoAnn married Orville Myers on October 1, 1950, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Corona. They lived on a farm by Revillo, SD, and another north of Milbank. While living on the farm, JoAnn helped with feeding the calves and chickens. She also raised a garden and canned vegetables and fruits. It was very apparent that JoAnn’s true life’s work was caring for her husband and family.

The family resided south of Wilmot, SD, before purchasing a home in Milbank around 1973. JoAnn and Orville resided in the home until his death in 1995. JoAnn remained in the home until her passing.

JoAnn was a Life Member of V. F. W. Ladies Auxiliary and Disabled American Veteran’s Auxiliary. She was an active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank and assisted on the Mission Serving Team and Tabitha Ladies Aid. She enjoyed getting together with the ladies from church working on quilts and attending bible study.

Cherishing JoAnn’s memory are her children: Barbara (Chuck) Schuerman of Minnetonka, MN; Tom (Nancy) Myers of Milbank, SD; Chuck (Susan) Myers of Milbank, SD; and Nancy (Scott) Longhenry of Garretson, SD; sister-in-law, Esther Wiese; brother-in-law, Jim Remund; seven grandchildren: Kim Gunderson, Dan Myers, Joel Myers, Derek Myers, Stephanie Myers, Claire Longhenry, and Allison Longhenry; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
