Delvin Schuler, Sr.

Delvin Schuler, Sr., age 88, of Corona, died Thursday, May 21, 2015, at the Milbank Area Hospital – Avera Health.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Wilmot Lutheran Church in Wilmot with Rev. Sheila Pohl officiating. Burial will follow in the Wilmot City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, at Wilmot Lutheran Church with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Wednesday.

Casket bearers will be Tyler Frericks, Rob Block, Rick VanHoorn, Jake VanHoorn, Dustin Schuler, and Nathan Strege. Honorary bearers include all of Delvin’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Delvin LeRoy Schuler, Sr. was born on December 30, 1926, in Ortonville, MN to William August and Ellen Dora (Maly) Schuler. He attended Kilborn Township country school through the eighth grade and then completed one year at Milbank High School. Delvin then began farming with his father. On July 25, 1948, Delvin was united in marriage to Dorothy V. Hecht at Christ Lutheran Church. To this union, five children were born.

Delvin had a passion for farming, which began at an early age and continued for the majority of his life. Delvin was a dairy farmer until 1995, but continued to farm with his son until 2003. After retirement, he continued to help around the house and enjoyed feeding and watching the birds. A true outdoorsman, Delvin found enjoyment in fishing, duck and deer hunting, and snowmobiling. He especially enjoyed taking bus trips and visiting Branson with Dorothy. Most important to Delvin was his family and he loved any time spent with his dog, Sophie, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Delvin was a member of Wilmot Lutheran Church, where he served on the church board. He also taught Sunday School for several years at Christ Lutheran Church. Delvin served for eight years as the President of the school board and had the pleasure to spend 23 years on the Cenex Board (Farmers Union Coop).

Left with his loving memory is his wife, Dorothy Schuler of Corona; children: Suzanne (Denny) Nordquist of Milbank; Darwin (Holly) Schuler of Watertown; Paula (Randall) Janssen of Sioux Falls; Delvin Jr. (Sandy) Schuler of Corona; and Bradford (Kathy) Schuler of Sioux Falls; eleven grandchildren: Nicole, Amber, Dustin, April, Celesta, Kayla, Kendra, Karissa, Kirsten, Myranda, and Jaylyn; seven great-grandchildren: Jacob, Keauna, Hannah, Avah, Oliviah, Averie, Kadien; brother, William “Bill” Schuler of Twin Brooks; and sisters-in-law, Carolyn DesLauriers of Watertown and Vickie Hecht of Douglasville, GA.

Delvin was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Avoy Schuler; and two brothers-in-law.
