SUMMIT, S.D. – A Veblen woman has died as a result of injuries suffered in a vehicle fire earlier this month four miles south of Summit.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says Rebecca Stoughton, 53, died Tuesday from injuries caused in the vehicle fire that occurred June 9 on Interstate 29. The Patrol says the 2004 Buick Rendezvous was southbound when the vehicle started on fire.  The vehicle stopped at mile marker 203.

Other motorists pulled three people from the vehicle. Stoughton was the front seat passenger. The driver was Gabrielle Wanna, 23, Peever and the backseat passenger was Cassidy Wanna, an infant from Sisseton.

All three were transported to the Hennepin County Burn Center in Minneapolis.  The Highway Patrol says both Gabrielle Wanna and Cassidy Wanna are recovering from their injuries.

The reason for the fire is unknown.

Other agencies responding to the accident scene were the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, Summit Fire Department, Summit First Responders, Grant Roberts Ambulance Service and state Game, Fish and Parks.
