William Daniel Durbin was born on May 18, 1939, in Rolla, North Dakota to George and Mina (Richardson) Durbin. He was the fourth of six children.

The family moved to Cando, North Dakota in the early 1940s, and this is where Dan called home. After graduating from high school, he worked various construction jobs in North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana. He served in the North Dakota National Guard from 1956 until his honorable discharge on December 7, 1958.

In 1963, Dan married Vi Deschamp and in that marriage three children were raised – one step-daughter and two sons.

In 1967, Dan started working for Otter Tail Power Plant at Devils Lake, North Dakota, and continued in that career for 34 years until retiring in 2001 from the Big Stone Plant in South Dakota. In 1980, Dan married Clarice Lewis of Milbank and they made their home in Milbank.

Dan was a member of Living Word Lutheran Church. To be noted is that Dan was baptized with his grandson, Michael Durbin, in a special ceremony in February of 2000. He loved his family and step family very much, and enjoyed old cars and shaking dice with his buddies. He was also active with the American Legion in Big Stone City for many years.
