Milbank Junior Teeners Take Fourth at State VFW Baseball Tournament

The Milbank Junior Teener baseball team came home with a fourth place trophy following the 2015 South Dakota VFW state class A 13-14 baseball tournament in Mobridge this past weekend.
Milbank secured a first-round 6-3 victory over Tyndall Friday. The teams started off even at 1-1 after one inning of play. Tyndall added its second run in the second inning to go ahead 2-1. Milbank fired back with two runs in the third to take the advantage at 3-2. The opponents knotted the score again at 3-3 in the fourth before Milbank went ahead 5-3 in the fifth. The locals added its final run in the sixth and held on for the victory.
Eli Fischer sparked Milbank with two hits and two runs. Riley Gauer and Jake Karges each had one hit to complete the team’s four-hit contest. Also adding to the locals scorebook were Gauer, three runs, one stolen base and a walk; Karges, one walk; Jake Fox, one run, and Brock Jurgens, one walk.

Milbank advanced to semi-final action but suffered a disappointing 16-6 loss to West Central Saturday. The locals got off to a fast start with five runs plated in the opening inning. Milbank added another run in the second to take a 6-1 advantage after two innings of play.
West Central then took over the contest. The opponents scored one run in the third and three in the fourth to cut the deficit to 6-4. The Milbank defense began to struggle and allowed West Central to score seven runs in the fifth to go ahead 11-6. Milbank committed five errors in the inning which attributed to the turn around. Three more errors by the Teeners in the sixth allowed West Central to score five runs and end the contest early by the 10-run rule.
Karges went 3-for-4 for Milbank with three hits, including a double, and two runs. Gauer, Conner VanVooren and Brodie Holtquist belted out one hit each and scored one run while Fox had a walk and a run scored for Milbank. Holtquist and Jurgens also had one walk each.

With the semi-final loss, Milbank moved to the third match contest against Spearfish and dropped a close 6-5 game to finish fourth in the tournament.
Milbank held a 3-0 lead after five innings of play. Spearfish cut into the deficit at 3-2 at the end of the sixth. The Teeners plated two more runs in the seventh inning, but allowed Spearfish to score four runs in the final inning to wrap up the game.
Gauer set the pace for Milbank with two hits, three runs, three stolen bases and a walk. VanVooren added two hits and a run while Karges belted out two hits and walked once. Fox, Gabe DelaRosa and Noah Steinlicht added one hit each to Milbank’s nine game total. Other factors contributing to the locals’ offense were a stolen base by Holtquist; Fox had a stolen base and a walk; DelaRosa had a stolen base, and Steinlicht added one run and one walk for Milbank.
