The Milbank Area Bulldogs played host to 15 teams at its annual POET Invitational Boys Golf Tournament Monday at Pine Hills Golf Course. The event was rated a success.

“With 16 teams and over 90 golfers, the tournament ran very smoothly,” according to Milbank Area head boys golf coach Mark Keeton. “We teed off at 10 a.m. and had everyone in by 4 p.m. That’s making good time.”

The Bulldogs gathered 437 points and ended up 15th  in the team standings. Parkston won the event with a team score of 318. Madison took second at 337 while Sisseton and Tea Area tied for third with 340. Rounding out the team totals were Chamberlain, fifth, 342; Vermillion, sixth, 345; Aberdeen Roncalli, seventh, 347; Dell Rapids, eighth, 352; West Central, ninth, 367; Watertown junior varsity, 10th, 370; Sioux Valley, 11th, 373; Groton Area, 12th, 385; Redfield-Doland, 13th, 398, and Aberdeen Central junior varsity, 14th, 405. Mobridge-Pollock did not field a complete team.

Sophomore Adam Thomas led the Bulldogs with a final 18-hole round of 99. He fired in a 47 on the front nine and a 52 on the back. Thomas was 14 strokes out of the medal placings. Junior Will Mischel shot a 110 (55-55) for the day while Noah Pillatzki was close behind with a 112 (60-52). Also playing for the Bulldogs were Isaac Nolz, 116 (56-60), Casey Buttke, 125 (58-67) and Chase Pinkert, 143 (68-75).

“Our scores were higher than I expected,” noted Keeton. “We have young players with not much experience. If we can improve our short game, the scores will drop.”
