Milbank Area boys and girls cross country teams competed at one of the largest cross country meets in the nation. They traveled to the Roy Griak Invitational meet on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis on Saturday, September 26.

Griak was a legendary cross country and track and field coach for the Golden Gophers for 51 years until his death this past July at the age of 91. This year marked the 30th Anniversary of the Invitational.

“It was a great opportunity for our runners,” said Milbank Area head coach Eric Townsend. “The athletes had the opportunity to watch some College Division I runners, too.”

Two of the girl’s runners cracked the Milbank all-time Roy Graik course time list. Taylor Thue ran the 5K course in a time of 23:04 which put her 21st on the list. Danica Schulte finished with a time of 23:40 to land her 34th on the list. Thue placed 143rd in the event while Schulte was 196th.
“Our runners competed hard,” noted Townsend. “The meet was a great experience. Both the  boys and girls teams are in a pretty good position for a strong finish to the season. A couple injuries and illnesses will hopefully get cleared up so we can have as many runners at their best as possible.”
Rounding out the field of 443 runners in the girls 5K for Milbank Area were Amaya Street, 295th, 24:48; Allison Leddy, 299th, 24:51; Madi Thue, 306th, 24:59; Shauna Pauli, 362nd, 26:06, and Shea Hooth, 365th, 26:09.
The boys 5K race featured 485 runners. Kody Johnson topped the field for Milbank Area with 289th place and a time of 20:35. Other Bulldog runners were Dylan Johnson, 326th, 20:52; Tanner Bock, 369th, 21:18; Elias Magilke, 408th, 21:54; Luke Wold, 422nd, 22:08; Caden Bjordahl, 433rd, 22:51;
