_DSC0043The Milbank Area Lady Bulldogs secured its second win of the season with a 49-45 non-conference girls basketball victory over the Morris Area Tigers Monday, January 4, at the Milbank Armory. The locals improved to 2-4 with the win.

Milbank Area started out the first quarter with solid pressure defense and got its shots to fall resulting in a 9-7 lead. The Lady Bulldogs committed several turnovers to start the second period and fell behind. The locals came back and overtook the advantage at 15-11 with a put back by Sophia Seffrood and a lay in by Caryssa Mielitz. Mielitz added a put back of her own before Mackayla Schuelke drained a three pointer to widen the gap to 20-11 with just over two minutes left in the half. Seffrood added another bucket while Karlee Mertens dropped in a free throw to maintain the lead at 23-15 at the midway mark.

The Lady Bulldogs played a solid game and maintained a 10 point lead throughout the third period. Milbank Area was ahead on the scoreboard 33-23 heading into the final stanza when things got a little more interesting. Morris Area came back to cut the lead to six points with just over one minute left in the contest. The Tigers kept plugging away and came to within three points with two free throws. Mertens sealed the win with another lone free throw to give Milbank Area the 49-45 victory.

“I was really happy with how we executed our offense,” stated Lady Bulldogs’ head coach Joe Frederiksen. “I feel our defense has been playing well all season and it showed again in this game.”
Molly Rick led the locals with 16 points, three rebounds, two steals, one assist and one turnover. Mielitz followed with 11 points, six rebounds, one steal and two turnovers. Schuelke tallied nine points, one steal, one assist and three turnovers while Seffrood added four points, four rebounds and one steal. Mikayla Street contributed four points, three rebounds, three steals and one turnovers, and Mertens had four points, one board and one turnover. Rounding out the scoring for Milbank Area was Shelby Hooth with one point, one rebound, one steal and one assist. Mikaela Hoeke snared two rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs.

Milbank Area improved its shooting with 39 percent from the field. The Lady Bulldogs went 17 for 44 in the contest and secured the victory with 24 rebounds, nine steals, three assists and 13 turnovers.

Morris Area made 46 percent of its shots from the field, making 15 of 33 attempts. The Tigers finished with 28 rebounds, 10 steals and 18 turnovers.

Milbank Area will host Groton Area Thursday, January 7, at the Milbank Armory. The C game is slated for 5:15 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs will wrap up the week with a contest in Sisseton Saturday, January 9.
