The Milbank High School debate team won the Class A Sweepstakes at the Sioux Falls Lincoln Silverbowl tournament Friday and Saturday, January 15 and 16.
Students competed in three rounds of individual events Friday and a total of five preliminary debate rounds between the two days.
In individual events, Connor Lightfield qualified for the finals in Domestic Extemp and earned sixth place. Claire Mischel was an honor finalist in Novice Extemp. She wrapped up the weekend with a 3-2 record.
In debate, Rebekah Tuchscherer and Lightfield both made it to the semi-final round in Lincoln-Douglas debate while Shawn Stemsrud finished fourth in Novice Lincoln-Douglas with a 4-1 overall record.
“This was Shawn and Claire’s first debate competing in Lincoln-Douglas,” explained head debate coach Natasha Hartman. “They both did exceptionally well.”
Macie Redmond and Kimberlly Aburto debated in Varsity Public Forum. It was Aburto’s first varsity debate.
