_DSC0028The Milbank Bulldogs sent five grapplers to the awards stand at the Lee Wolf Invitational wrestling tournament in Aberdeen Saturday, January 30.

Jake Anderson set the pace for the locals with a second place finish. Cole Dockter and Taran Mogard landed in sixth place while Tyler Krause and Isaac Fischer finished in eighth place in their respective weight classes.

“The guys battled hard but did not capitalized on some opportunities,” stated head coach Jeremy Tostenson. “Now that we are in the short time of the season, the guys need to keep working hard to seize those opportunities.”

Milbank tallied 54 points and finished 12th in the team standings. The host team, Aberdeen Central, won the event with 224 points. Huron was the runner-up with 195, and Canton placed third with 185.5.

The Bulldogs have two more showings before the Region 1A meet. Milbank will travel to Huron Thursday, February 4, for a triangular with Huron and Pierre before heading back to Huron for an individual tournament Saturday, February 13, to wrap up the regular season.

The grapplers will battle for a chance to the state tournament during the Region 1A tournament Saturday, February 20, in Pierre. The top four places in each weight class will represent the region at the state meet in Rapid City Friday and Saturday, February 26 and 27.

The Milbank junior varsity wrestling team competed in a tournament in Groton Saturday, January 30, and finished eighth in the team standings with 58 points.
Koben Huber led the locals with a second place finish. Toby Schneck and JD Lusk landed in fourth place in their weight classes.
