Bernard FlonesMundwiler Funeral Home announces the death of Bernard “Briskey” Flones, age 91, of rural Ortley, SD, who died Thursday, February 11, 2016, at his home.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank, SD, with Rev. Mark Chapman officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the time of service at the funeral home on Saturday. Burial will take place at a later date.

Bernard Flones was born on June 17, 1924, in Dexter Township, SD, to Carl and Hannah (Klegseth) Flones. He attended school in the Lura and Blooming Valley school districts. On December 24, 1959, Bernard was united in marriage with Pauline (Oswskey) Lee.

Bernard served as a military policeman in the United States Army from February 23, 1947, until his honorable discharge on August 22, 1947. After he returned home from the Army, Bernard worked for the railroad and helped his brothers, Roy and Pete, farm. He spent some time working for Batie Implement in Webster, SD, and Massey Ferguson in Watertown, SD. Bernard farmed, raising cows and sheep, and also enjoyed assisting others farm their land. He helped Eddie Brennan and his son, Terry Lee, on their farms. Bernard retired in 1996 from Dakota Poultry.

Bernard was a member of Bergan Lutheran Church in rural South Shore and the Ortley V.F.W. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and always had a huge garden. Most of all, Bernard loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandkids.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Pauline Flones of rural Ortley, SD; children: Jean Harms of Watertown, SD; Robin Flones of Summit, SD; Kelly Flones of Ortley, SD; Pat (Linda) Lee of Sioux Falls, SD; Judy (Arlon) Pies of Big Stone City, SD; Mike Lee of South Shore, SD; and Terry (Steph) Lee of Summit; grandchildren: Danielle Harms, John Harms, Janelle Harms, Brenden Nelson, Morgan Selchert, Jeff (Steph) Lee, Kim (Mike) Richey, Kevin Pies, Karlie (Gerald) Maag, Melanie (Brett) Wagner, and Jeremy Lee; great-grandchildren: Nikki, Brian, Jenny, Devin, Jacob, Luke, Regan, Bethanie, Brianna, Colter, and Calen; great-great-grandchildren: Sheldon, Layla, Spencer, Aleyah, and Aleyana; brother, Harold “Sonny” (Audrey) Flones of Arizona; sisters-in-law, Arvis Flones, Joanne Flones, and Irene (Matt) Schmitz; brothers-in-law, Jim (Joanne) Oswskey and Ben (Lila) Oswskey; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his faithful companion, Snarbull.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Harvey, Roy, Arnold, and Pete; sisters, Gladys Jacobson and Nina Johnson; son, Tim Lee; son in infancy, Gerald; and great-grandson, A.J.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Bergen Lutheran Church in rural South Shore, SD.
