The Milbank Area Bulldogs will face the Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers in the first game of the Region 1A high school boys basketball tournament Monday, February 29, in Groton. The two teams will begin their quest with a 4:30 p.m. tipoff.
Milbank Area will take a 5-15 regular season record into the matchup and is seeded number seven. Roncalli has a 12-8 record and is the number two seed in the tournament. The two teams battled on the court in late January where the Bulldogs suffered a 56-46 loss.
“We must rebound and take care of the ball,” said Milbank Area head coach Matt Bastian. “Anything to gain possessions will give us a chance.” The locals will be led by the four seniors on the team – Jacob Jackson, Nolan Foss, Isaac Snaza and Kyle Montag. Underclassmen Jonny Ash, Nate Bien and Matt Lenards will be looked upon to contribute heavily for the Bulldogs.
Free throws and a solid game on both sides of the ball will be the key to Milbank Area’s chances of advancing to the semi-finals. “The games we have been successful in, we have made free throws,” noted Bastian. “Finally, we must believe in ourselves and know that we can do this.”
The second game this evening will feature #3 Groton Area and #6 Webster Area. The final game of the opening round will pit #4 Britton-Hecla against #5 Tiospa Zina.
The winner of the Britton-Hecla/Tiospa Zina game will match up with #1 seeded Sisseton in the semi-final round Thursday, March 3, in Groton. The winners of the other two games Monday will face off in the second semi-final game at approximately 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The championship game is set for Tuesday, March 8, at 7 p.m. in Groton with the winner advancing to the State Class A boys basketball tournament.
