2016_Adult_Reading_Program_News_release_(1)The Grant County Public Library will kicked off an adult reading program Monday, February 29, with the theme “Escape the Ordinary.”

The program will challenge adults to escape the ordinary by exploring heroes, superheroes and extraordinary people, places and activities found under great book titles. The program will conclude Saturday, April 9.

“From fiction to non-fiction, there are great books for everyone,” exclaimed Jody Carlson, library director. “This reading program offers rewards for doing what you already love plus gives incentives for those currently not avid readers.”

For each book read during the program, patrons will receive a registration slip to enter weekly prize drawings. Any book, magazine or audio book is acceptable and qualifies for the program. “Patrons who enjoy eBooks can even bring their e-readers into the library and be given credit for those titles as well,” said Carlson. Participants can also complete themed activity sheets to earn prizes.

Special events will take place throughout the program. Each Thursday in March (March 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31) from 6-7 p.m. the library will host an adult coloring open house. “Coloring is an activity that we tend to associate with children,” mentioned Carlson. “However it turns out coloring can be beneficial for adults for its de-stressing power. Adult coloring is currently sweeping the nation. Come join in the session as a time to create and relax.”

Another opportunity to explore heroes will be available in a “Book to Movie” previewing of “American Sniper” which is currently highlighted as the Big Library Read and is available March 17-31 through Overdrive with unlimited access. “This book is a New York Times bestselling memoir of U.S. Navy Seal Chris Kyle and the source for Clint Eastwood’s blockbuster movie which was nominated for six Academy Awards,” explained Carlson.

Patrons are encourage to read “American Sniper” and attend a move preview at the library at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 7, with a short discussion following. The book is available at the library or through Overdrive for eBook or audiobook users.

No pre-registration or fees are required. All adults are welcome to join the fun!
