Birdie was born April 9, 1929, in Graceville, MN to James Leigh and Gertrude (Bongard) Lockwood. At the age of 18, she graduated from Ortonville High School, attended the University of Minnesota and Normal Training School in Aberdeen, SD and then taught country school at the age of 19 for one year.
She married her high school sweetheart, Justin Scholberg, on September 24, 1949, in Eidskog Lutheran Church – where she was also baptized and confirmed. Their first home was in Otrey Township before moving to the Scholberg farm north of Ortonville in 1960. Together they raised six children, farmed for 40 years, and later bought a fifth-wheel camper for retirement. Justin and Birdie spent 12 years traveling the country and spending time with loved ones.
Birdie enjoyed sewing projects, cooking family meals, and truly enjoyed being a homemaker. She was an avid reader, particularly non-fiction and current events. Birdie was a fantastic gardener, especially with flowers. She was an active member of the church, teaching Sunday School and was a member of the Bethel Bible Study. She served on the Ortonville School Board for several years, and was Chairman for two years. Birdie was a devoted wife and taught her children to love life. She passed on joy and wisdom to her grandchildren.
Birdie is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Justin; and six children: Tom (Deb) Scholberg of Minneapolis, MN; David (Meg) Scholberg and Mark (Cindy) Scholberg – both of Ortonville, MN; Corrine (Gary) Stevenson of Fresno, CA; Barbara (John) Ness of Horace, ND; and Steve (Maria) Scholberg of Lake Elsinore, CA. She also has 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two brothers: Fred (Nola) Lockwood and Jim (Lenore) Lockwood; and her sister, Diane (Bob) Martinka.
