_DSC0232The Milbank High School track and field team started its season with a bang during the Whetstone Valley Invitational April 5, in Milbank. Freshman Taylor Thue and junior Tanner Gauer both secured a spot in the State Class A meet later this season with qualifying marks during the invitational.
Thue captured first place in four events. She topped the field in the 300-meter hurdles and met the qualifying standard of :50.0 by running a time of :48.55. Her time also placed her fourth on the MHS all-time honor roll. Thue also won the 100-meter hurdles and was four-tenths of a second away from the qualifying mark in that event. She ran a leg on each of the winning 400 and 1,600-meter relays to complete the quadruple win. Other members of the 400-meter relay were Elisabeth Schwenn, Makayla Johnson and Mackayla Schuelke. Team members for the winning mile relay team were Johnson, Danica Schulte and Shea Hooth.

Gauer won the boys’ 100-meter dash with a time of :11.16, edging out the state standard of :11.20. He also won the 200-meter dash in a time of :23.35, missing the qualifying mark of :23.10. He ran the final leg of the 400-meter relay in which the team finished first, but was one-tenth of a second from qualifying. Their time placed them tenth on the MHS all-time honor roll. Other team members were Kyle Montag, Cole Dockter, and Jake Anderson.
Freshman Elisabeth Schwenn was a triple winner. She captured first place in the 100 and 200-meter dashes and was a member of the winning 400-meter relay team.

Nate Bien was a double winner. He earned the top spot in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. Jake Karges and Jake Anderson also earned individual wins. Karges took first in the long jump and Anderson earned the top spot in the triple jump with a leap of 40-05. The state qualifying standard for the triple jump is 40-10.

Milbank will host the South Dakota National Guard track and field meet Tuesday, April 12, at AB Campbell Stadium. Field events begin at 3:30 p.m. and running events start at 4 p.m.
