Thirty youth from Grant County participated in the South Dakota State 4-H Shooting Sports competition April 22-24 at the Expo building in Fort Pierre, SD. Over 1,500 youth across South Dakota posted qualifying scores to attend the state shoot. Seven ranges were used in the Expo building and four ranges were used off-site to accommodate 22-rifle, pistol events, and 3-D archery.
Grant County Shooting Sports began its season in January and ended with the state competition. The program was instructed by certified volunteers, including: Jason Karels, David Cizadlo, Bill Wheeler, Mike McKernan, and Dennis Amberg in archery; John Schwagel, Chris Mursu, and Twila Mursu in trigger point. Archery is held at the Milbank Valley Archers range and BB gun, air rifle, and air pistol is held at the 4-H grands exhibit building.
“The Grant County 4-H Shooting Sports program teaches youth safety and shooting techniques,” stated Sara Koepke, Grant County 4-H Youth Program Advisor. “Shooting sports works towards developing skills youth need to be productive and positive adults. Decision making, teamwork, problem solving, responsibility, and safety are a few of the many skills youth gain from taking part in shooting sports.”
Grant County 4-H Shooting Sports will resume January 2017. For more information about the program, contact the 4-H office at 605-432-9221.
