The Castlewood Monarchs were no match for the Milbank Firechiefs amateur baseball team Sunday, May 15. The Firechiefs scorched the Monarchs 10-1 for a victory in their opening game at Legion Field in Milbank.
The Chiefs started the game with one run in the first inning. Castlewood came back to knot the score at 1-1 in the fourth before Milbank added one run each in the sixth and seventh innings. The locals then broke the game wide open with seven runs in the eighth inning to secure the win.
Left fielder Ryan Conrad, center fielder Jeff Fish, and pitcher and third baseman Taylor Boerger led the Firechiefs with two hits each. Matt Stephan, Travis Lester, Dan Karges, Ronnie Krause, and Brock Gomer tallied one hit apiece in the contest.
Boerger collected the win on the mound for the Firechiefs. He went six innings with 14 strike outs, four walks, three hits, and one run. Lance Frogner came in on relief and got the save for Milbank. He sat down seven batters and allowed two hits and one walk.
The Firechiefs will travel to Clear Lake tonight, May 18, and will play host to Lake Norden Sunday, May 22, at 5 p.m. at Legion Field in Milbank.
