Four golfers from the Milbank High School girls golf team completed their top round of the season and punched their tickets to the State Class A golf tournament during the Region 1A meet in Salem Tuesday, May 31.

Earning a Region 1A medal and a place at state were juniors Mikaela Hoeke and Clare Van Dover and freshmen Kylie Kasuske and Tori Quade.

“I am extremely proud of how well the girls played,” expressed Milbank head golf coach Mark Keeton. “We had a plan of how we wanted to play the course at the region meet and the girls executed it. As a team, we shot an impressive 22 strokes better than our previous low. The four qualifiers either tied their personal best for the year or beat it.”

Kasuske led the Lady Bulldogs with a seventh place finish at the Region 1A meet. She shot a 98 for the 18-hole tournament. Van Dover and Quade each shot a 110 and tied for 18th place while Hoeke was just two strokes behind with a 112. She tied for 21st place overall. Just outside the qualifying mark was Alaina Rausch, which finished the day with a 116, just two strokes away from heading to the state meet herself.

Milbank finished fourth in the team standings with a season low score of 430. Madison was crowned the Region 1A champion with a 367. Sisseton was the runner-up at 389 while McCook Central-Montrose took third with a 401. Rounding out the team totals were Sioux Valley, 433; Dell Rapids, 455; Aberdeen Roncalli, 465, and Groton, 514.

The top three teams from the region tournament qualified for team play at state. Because Milbank also qualified four individuals, the Bulldogs will also be eligible to compete for the team title.
