_DSC0091Nine MALST swimmers made quite a splash at the Britton Invitational June 25. The athletes set state qualifying times and secured top places in the meet.

“MALST performed well despite windy conditions,” stated head coach Jodi Street. “It was a smaller but successful meet. We had spent the last two weeks of practice working on stroke and drill work and I saw that pay off in Britton.”

Hallie Schulte became a state qualifier in the 50-meter butterfly. Amaya Street added a state time in the 100-meter freestyle and Clare Van Dover had three qualifying times in the 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly, and 100-meter backstroke.

britton_somSchulte, Street, and Paul Van Dover were named Swimmers of the Meet. “Hallie had been working on her 50-meter fly time very hard the last two meets and it all came together for her in Britton,” said Coach Street. “She swam really well throughout the whole meet. Amaya pulled away from the meet with three first place finishes and another state qualifying time. Paul has worked really hard in practice and is our top time cutter overall. He cut 9.22 seconds off his 50-meter breaststroke and cut time in every single event he swam.”

MALST will host their annual lap-a-thon Thursday, June 30, in which they strive to complete 110 or 220 laps. “Swimmers set personal goals for this event, but it is amazing how many of them will reach the 110 or 220 mark,” Street said. “For our older swimmers, 220 laps is just over three miles, so it is pretty intense.”

Following the lap-a-thon, the team will take a short break over the 4th of July holiday. They will get back in action with the Webster Invitational High Point meet July 8-9.
