While waiting for his laicization from Rome, Jerry studied at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington for one year. He later enrolled in the University of Minnesota Law School, where he graduated with the class of 1972. On September 11, 1971, Jerry was united in marriage with Patricia O’Connor. Upon completion of law school, the couple moved back to Ortonville. Jerry began working for Bob Pflueger at the law office in Ortonville. Jerry was a faithful member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Ortonville. He also preached once a month for over 20 years at the Christ Episcopal Church in Milbank.
