Milbank American Legion Post 9 baseball team wrapped up its regular season this past weekend and will head into the Region 1B tournament with a 21-8 overall record.
Post 9 split contests with Big Stone City Tuesday, July 5, before falling in the championship game of the Clark Rotary tournament this past weekend.
In the first game of double header action, Milbank suffered an 8-1 loss to Big Stone City. Post 9 plated one run in the opening inning, but could not stop the hot bats of its opponent. Milbank collected six hits in the game, lead by Tanner Gauer with two. Jacob Jackson, Mitch Quade, Jake Anderson and Brady Gomer added one hit each. Jonny Ash was credited with the pitching loss for Milbank.
In the nightcap, Milbank came roaring back with a 9-0 victory over Big Stone City. Post 9 scored two runs in each of the first three innings to go ahead 6-0. Milbank added three more runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Post 9’s nine runs came on eight hits. Tristan Hall led the offense with three hits including a home run. Brady Krause, Ash, Jackson, Anderson and Quade had one hit each in the contest. Krause earned the win on the mound for Milbank.
The locals took part in the Clark Rotary baseball tournament this past weekend. Milbank defeated Clark in the opening round 9-1 before cruising to a 15-7 victory over Watertown Junior Legion. Post 9 then fell 1-0 to McCook/Miner in the championship tilt to finish second overall.
In its first game, Milbank led 5-1 after the first three innings. Post 9 plated three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to secure the 9-1 victory.
Hall led Milbank with two hits, including a home run, and scored three runs. Dalton Koch belted out three hits while Krause and Gauer had two each. Jackson and Dominic Boerger rounded out the team’s 11-hit game with one hit apiece. Dylan Johnson earned the win on the mound for Post 9.
In semi-final action, Milbank rolled to a 15-7 win over Watertown Junior Legion in five innings. The game was called short because of the tournament’s eight-run rule.
Hall again led the team with four hits and three runs. He belted out another home run to lead the locals charge. Krause, Gauer, Koch and Brady Gomer tallied two hits each while Jackson, Anderson, Johnson and Boerger had one apiece. Hall collected the pitching win for Post 9.
In the championship game, Milbank fell 1-0 to McCook/Miner. The opponent plated one run in the opening inning. Milbank held McCook/Miner scoreless through the next six innings but were unable to secure any runs itself.
Post 9’s one hit in the game came from Gauer. Boerger was credited with the loss on the mound.
Milbank American Legion Post 9 will begin play in the Region 1B tournament Thursday at 5 p.m. The region tournament will take place in Milbank at Legion Field. The winner of the tournament will advance to the State B baseball tournament in Webster July 22-26.
