Teams Find Success Penning and Sorting

“The weather was great, but the cattle were ornery and a bit rambunctious,” said Kathy Tyler after the team penning event at the Whetstone Valley Rodeo grounds July 9. Twenty-nine teams did their best to pen three cattle of the same number. Things started slowly, but after about 12 teams, things began to pick up for the cowboys and cowgirls.

Eight teams penned all three cattle and six teams penned one or two. “Teams are starting to pen at least one or two because of the change in the point system this year,” explained Tyler.

Three places received money. Shane Schuchard, Louie Minder, and Brad Hanson placed first, and Dan Thyne, Milt Stengel, and Steven Hills came in second. Finishing third were Marsha Wieting, Keith Kelly, and Randy Schuchard.
Twenty teams participated in the sorting event. Teams were given a number and attempted to sort out seven cattle in the correct order. First place money went to Randy Schuchard, Lynette Grady, and Dustin Hills. Kelly Peterson, Casey Yamaura, and Joe Kanthak took home the second place money.
