BULLDOG

Milbank High School’s fall athletics will soon get underway with the start of football, volleyball, cross country, boys golf, and girls tennis. A recent decision by the South Dakota High School Activities Association board made a change in the start date for all cross country teams across the state. The board voted to begin cross country at the same time as football and volleyball for the 2016-2017 school year. Football, volleyball, and cross country begin practice Thursday, August 11 and golf and tennis start Monday, August 8.

Seventh and eighth grade football and volleyball will begin practice following the second day of school, Thursday, August 25.

Coaches for the fall sports for 2016-2017:

Mandatory All Seasons Sports Meeting
A mandatory sports meeting will be held Thursday, August 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the high school theater for all athletes and parents in grades 7-12 who plan to participate in any athletic activity. Students who plan to participate in activities which are not scheduled to begin in the fall are also required to attend the meeting. A guest speaker will address parents and athletes prior to each sport specific team meeting.

ImPACT Testing
As part of the Milbank School District’s concussion procedures and protocol, all students who expect to participate in athletics during the upcoming school year are expected to complete the ImPACT test to establish a baseline in the event of a concussion.

Testing schedule:
August 8: 8:00 am – Cheerleaders, Boys Golf, Girls Tennis (Grades 7, 9 & 11)
August 11: 8:00 am – FBall (Grades 9 & 11)
August 11: 9:00 am – XC (Grades 7, 9 & 11)
August 11: 10:00 am – VBall (Grades 9 & 11)
August 24: 2:00 pm – FBall (Grade 7)
August 24: 2:00 pm – VBall (Grade 7)
Parental permission forms must be signed prior to the athletes completing the ImPACT testing. The parental permission forms will be available on the school webpage prior to testing.

Physicals and Physical Updates
All athletic physicals and physical updates must be completed and turned in to MHS athletic director, Boyd Sussex, prior to the first day of any fall sport practice. Athletes will not be allowed to begin practicing until this requirement has been fulfilled.

“The physical form should include three pages of information,” stated Sussex. This requirement is not complete without all three pages. The physical forms are light blue. There is some confusion about the History form. It says to leave it with the doctor’s office. We would like you to return it to the school. That is one of the three pages.”

The interim physical update form includes two pages of information. “That form is purple,” Sussex said. “Two pages are required before this requirement is complete. Please turn them in to the main office at the high school as soon as possible.” A complete physical is required for athletes in grades 7, 9 and 11, and a physical update for grades 8, 10 and 12.

Individual practice schedules for each specific sport will be announced. Keep reading The Valley Express for those important updates.
