Nine swimmers from the Milbank Area Lions Swim Team took part in the Long Course B Championship Meet in Aberdeen this past weekend and earned their final State A qualifying times of the season.

“This is the last chance swimmers have to qualify for the State A meet,” explained MALST head coach Jodi Street. “They cannot swim in any event they are already qualified in, so its a great meet for the athletes to challenge all of their strokes and distance swims in a long course pool.”

The nine athletes that took part in the meet achieved 14 new state qualifying times and placed third overall for percentage performance. “We finished just behind Watertown, which I was very happy with,” noted Coach Jodi.

Earning new qualifying times were Clare Van Dover, Amaya Street, Aubrey Fraasch, Brooke Fraasch, Carter Gloe and Liam Street. “It’s nice to see qualifying times in the longer distances,” said Coach Jodi. “Many of the short course meets do not have the opportunity to swim those events.”

Amaya and Liam Street both earned a first place high point trophy in their age groups. Amaya swims in the girls 13-14 group while Liam is in the boys 8 and under.

Other high point winners were Carter Gloe, 14th, boys 8 and under; Aubrey Fraasch, 10th, girls 9-10; Trey Gloe, 16th, boys 9-10; Autumn Fox, 28th, girls 11-12; William Karels, 15th, boys 11-12; Brooke Fraasch, 7th, girls 15-16, and Clare Van Dover, 6th, girls 17-19.

Autumn Fox and Aubrey Fraasch were named swimmers of the meet. “Autumn had a very successful meet, cutting the most time overall as well as cutting time in every event. She had a major time cut of 47.20 seconds in her 400 freestyle. Aubrey worked hard for the state time in the 100 butterfly, working on her technique and strong kick in practice. Not many 9-year-olds can swim the 100 fly like her.”

Fifteen swimmers have qualified for the South Dakota Long Course State A Championship meet in Rapid City slated for Friday through Sunday, July 29-31.
