_DSC0165The Milbank Firechiefs were named the Eastern Dakota League District 1B baseball runner-up following a real barn burner of 13 innings. The Chiefs eventually fell 6-5 in the loss to Clark on July 30.

Both teams were scoreless until Clark punched in two runs in the fourth. Milbank went ahead 3-2 in the top of the sixth with the help of Jeff Fish who scored Jesse Krause on his two-run home run. Clark answered with two runs in the bottom to go ahead 4-3. The Firechiefs plugged away and plated two runs in the eighth inning to take the advantage at 5-4. Clark evened the score at 5-5 in the ninth and pushed the game into extra innings.

Both teams then suffered another three-inning dry spell. Clark ended the game with a walk-off single by Clark to down Milbank 6-5.

Fish led the Chiefs offense with two hits, one run, and two RBIs. Matt Stephan and Taylor Boerger belted out two hits and J. Krause, Lance Frogner, and Dominic Boerger added one hit each. Ryan Conrad and Ronnie Krause were credited with one RBI apiece.

T. Boerger started the game on the mound for Milbank and pitched the first six innings. He struck out three batters and allowed 11 hits, four runs, and two walks. D. Boerger took the pitching loss for the Firechiefs. He finished the game with 17 strikeouts and allowed seven hits, two runs, and two walks.

Milbank will face Kimball-White Lake in the opening round of the South Dakota State Class B Amateur Baseball Tournament. The first pitch will be thrown at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, August 5, in Mitchell.
