_DSC0196The Grant County Christian Service Council provided 157 children with school supplies on Monday, August 8 at The Milbank Visitors Center. Heather Rise of Interlakes Community Action said, “This represents an increase of 20 children from last year.”

The council also partnered with Feeding South Dakota and distributed 6,000 pounds of food to the families and other Grant County residents in conjunction with the Back-to-School event. “Feeding South Dakota offered frozen meats, dairy products, canned and boxed goods, bread and bakery items, and fresh produce to the families,” said Rise. “Each family was given roughly 60 pounds of food which they shopped for during the event.”
Through generous donations, the council also gave out vouchers for haircuts; school pride hoodies; shoes, socks, and underwear from Shopko; and a family photo session with VPD Studio.

Volunteers for the event included: Amber Scriver, Cheryl Breske, Helen and Miriam Chavez Larraga, Jessica Castellanos, Anne and Danica Schulte, Morgan Schafer, Landon and Maiah Brown, Tanner Kettwig, Nicholas Batchelor, Angie Weber, Garrett and Karson Weber, JoAnn Volkenant, Steve Misener, Kathleen Holscher, Mary Hoff, Mindy Giesen, Colten and Tucker Giesen, Linnea Schwandt, Karen Kiefer, Kristy Liebe, Carol Angerhofer, Janet Loeschke, LeAnn Kuper, and Milbank Community Pride.

“We are blessed to live in such a great community that steps up to assist families,” stated Rise. “We thank the people who donate and shop at the Community Thrift Shop which makes events like these possible. Thank you also to our amazing volunteers. Our community makes me proud to say I am from Milbank.”
