_DSC0021 (3)Milbank hosted the Poet Invitational August 18, at Pine Hills Golf Course. Eight teams battled wet rainy conditions. Milbank Area landed in sixth place by scoring 422. “Our team score was a little higher – not a big surprise as Pine Hills is a much tougher course,” head coach Mark Keeton stated. “As predicted, Aberdeen Roncalli and Sisseton appear to be the top two teams in the NEC this year.”

Sisseton and Aberdeen Roncalli tied for first place with a 332. Sioux Valley was second with a 378 and Groton finished third with a 385. Watertown JV was fourth at 387; Aberdeen Central JV, fifth, 421, and Redfield-Doland, seventh, 459.

Thomas was the only Bulldog to place in the top 15. He tied for 13th with a final round of 93 (49-44). Completing the varsity team for Milbank were Conner VanVooren, 100 (47-53), Logan Meyer, 114 (52-62); Will Mischel, 115 (53-62), and Isaac Nolz, 120 (56-64).

“We also had a couple of solid JV scores. Noah Pillatzki finished in third place with a 97 and Gage Sayler finished in fifth with a score of 100,” said Keeton. Chase Pinkert who tallied a 102 and Keaton Hagen at 126 also competed for the JV team.

Keeton is in his fourth season as the head boys coach. He will rely heavily on his five returning letter winners. Mischel is the lone senior on the squad for 2016. He, along with juniors Thomas, Pillatzki, Nolz, and Pinkert, bring experience and leadership. “We have a big group this year, and the upperclassmen know how we run things. I look to them to help out and guide the younger golfers,” Keeton stated.

Also on the roster are: junior Gage Sayler; sophomores Conner VanVooren, Keaton Hagen, and Kacen Huber; freshman Joe Harstad; eighth graders Logan Meyer, Christian Peery, Jake Trevett, and Eric Van Sambeek; and seventh graders Logan Fenhaus and Keegan Wheeler.

“Our goal is to improve every week,” explained Keeton. “We will focus on our short game. If your short game is on, you will score well no matter how you are playing. We will also work on our course management.”
