Girls Tennis Team Serves Up Win

The Milbank girls tennis team secured a 7-0 victory over BBE, MN, September 1, in a make-up match on the road. “This was a nice win to even our dual record at 3-3,” said Milbank head tennis coach Jim Dahl. “It wasn’t as one-sided as the score appears. There were several very competitive sets – a tie break, two at 5, and three at 4.” Using the Minnesota format, Paige Johnson, Tatiana Stemsrud, Jodi DeVaal, and Jamie DeVaal each produced a singles victory and the remainder of the team secured three doubles wins.

“We are pleased where our players are at in this stage of the season,” stated Dahl. “Having that many tightly contested sets and being down early in several, really speaks well of our players. It also appeared that our conditioning paid off. BBE was more leg and arm weary in the latter sets. It was especially pleasing to witness all the underclassmen perform so well in the doubles.”

Milbank will travel to Watertown Tuesday, September 6, for what Dahl considers to be the most competitive match of the season. “Watertown is having a fine season based on the results I have seen.”

1. Hallie Essington/Rhianna Cantine defeated Sara Schmitz/Mallory Bents, 6-0, 6-4; 2. Rhianna Welberg/Jenna Johnson won over Kim Terhaar/Ericka Greiner, 7-5, 6-2; 3. Hattie Muellenbach/Kaitlyn Schmitt downed Amanda Feldman/Chandler TeBrake, 6-3, 6-3.
Exhibition Matches
Bailey Frerichs/Alexis Ninneman defeated Kylee Terhaar/Maddy Lee, 6-0, and Olivia Thieschafer/Paige Prentice, 6-1.
