_dsc0073Eighth grader, Halli Essington, was the lone winner for the Milbank girls tennis team in its 8-1 loss to Watertown Tuesday, September 6. She downed her opponent 6-4 and 6-0.

“Halli did a very nice job of keeping the ball in play with a high percentage of deeper ground strokes,” noted Bulldog head tennis coach Jim Dahl.
Number one doubles pair, Paige Johnson and Tatiana Stemsrud, battled in a competitive match. The duo took the first set 6-4, then dropped 1-6. “In the 10-point match tie break they had a match point leading 9-8, but it slipped away from them and Watertown took advantage.”

In the junior varsity and middle school matches, Milbank earned its first team win of the season over Watertown 5-4. Alexis Ninneman, at #5 singles, won 6-1 as did Morgan Folk at #6 singles. Hattie Muellenbach and Kaitlyn Schmitt won at #1 doubles 6-1. Bailey Frerichs and Jessica Fenhaus at #2 doubles won 6-2, and Alexis and Morgan at #3 doubles won 6-1.

The Lady Bulldogs travel to Brandon Friday, September 9, for the two-day Brandon Valley Invitational. Milbank will face Sioux Falls Lincoln and Vermillion on Friday, and Harrisburg, Rapid City Central and Brandon Valley on Saturday.

Jamie DeVaal fell to Megan Hauger, 6-1, 6-0; 5. Sarah Jarman lost to MacKenzie McClemans, 6-0, 6-0; 6. Halli Essington defeated Rachel Holien, 6-4, 6-0.
Doubles
1. Johnson/Stemsrud fell to VanderWeide/McClemans, 6-4, 1-6 (11-9); 2. DeVaal/DeVaal lost to Moran/Cummings, 6-0, 6-2; 3. Jarman/Essington dropped to Hauger/Holien, 6-1, 6-0.
Exhibition Matches
Rhianna Cantine fell to Megan Fannin, 8-0; Rhianna Welberg lost to Raeanna Zink, 8-0; Cantine/Welberg dropped to Fannin/Zink, 10-0.
