The Milbank High School vocal music department will open its concert series on Monday, October 17. The 96-member concert choir, under the direction of Miriam Schwenn, will present their annual fall concert at 7:30 p.m. in the MHS theater.
Musical selections range from Why We Sing and a traditional Scottish tune, Loch Lomond, to a composition entitled Kuimba and a new release, I Will Be The Light. A perennial favorite, Lee Greenwood’s God Bless The USA, is also on the program. Several students will be featured as soloists. In addition to the choir, area musicians will perform several numbers. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
Jimmie Berkner will serve as choir president this school year. Lindsey Geyer and Karlee Mertens are the soprano section leaders and Kerissa DeBoer, Brooke Fraasch, Paige Johnson, Mackayla Schuelke, and Mallory Trapp lead the alto section. Tenor and bass section leaders are Tim Gabriel and Shawn Stemsrud.
The MHS Choir includes 24 seniors. Taking part in their final choir season are: Zach Angerhofer, Taylor Balling, Jimmie Berkner, Kerissa DeBoer, Alexa Fraasch, Brooke Fraasch, Tim Gabriel, Lindsey Geyer, Mikaela Hoeke, Sarah Jarman, Paige Johnson, Karlee Mertens, Caryssa Mielitz, Savannah Mork, Nadia Ortiz, Kaitlyn Rufer, Trevor Schmidt, Mackayla Schuelke, Madi Schulte, MyKayla Thyne, Mallory Trapp, Clare VanDover, Emma VanVooren, and Ben Wagner.
Schwenn has spent her entire teaching career of 23 years at MHS. Under her helm, the MHS Choir has received a superior rating in 22 of those years at the Region III music contest.
