Lady Bulldogs Down Pheasants, Drop To Wildcats

The Milbank Area Lady Bulldogs wrapped up a busy week of high school volleyball action with a 3-0 victory over the Redfield-Doland Pheasants and a 3-0 loss to the Northwestern Wildcats. Milbank Area holds a 14-6 season record heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.
Milbank Area traveled to Redfield Thursday, October 13, and earned a solid 3-0 victory over the Pheasants. The Lady Bulldogs started out hot in the first set and took and early 10-5 lead. The locals pushed ahead to 15-8 and continued its steady play to win the first set at 25-21.
The teams played fairly even throughout much of the second set. Milbank Area jumped ahead at 8-4 before Redfield-Doland came back to go ahead 17-13. The Lady Bulldogs inched their way back into the match before knotting the score up at 22-22. The Pheasants hit the ball into the net, and then Molly Rick belted out two kills to secure the win for Milbank Area at 25-22.
Milbank Area trailed throughout much of the third set at 17-13 and again at 18-16. The score fell even at 18-18 with a Redfield-Doland error and a kill by Caryssa Mielitz. Madi Schulte found a open hole and Mielitz came up with a big block to go ahead 21-18. The Pheasants were shaken up and committed several errors which gave the Lady Bulldogs the 25-21 victory.
Mielitz led the team with 16 kills on 46-55 hitting, three aces on 10-11 serving, one block and 14 digs. Rick followed with 11 kills on 27-31 hitting, 6-7 serving and 17 digs while Mikaela Hoeke added three kills on 17-20 hitting, 19 assists on 72-72 setting, one ace on 19-20 serving and seven digs.
Jaden Hoeke tallied two kills on 7-8 hitting, one assist on 4-4 setting and one dig. Jaecy Engebretson contributed two kills on 10-14 hitting, two aces on 6-7 serving, three assists on 8-8 setting and six digs.
Also adding to the Lady Bulldog leaders were Schulte, one ace on 10-11 serving, one assist on 6-6 setting, one kill and five digs; Mackayla Schuelke, six assists on 28-28 setting, 7-8 serving and 11 digs; Maty Lightfield, 5-7 serving, 2-2 setting and nine digs; Mady Hilbrands, one kill on 4-6 hitting, and LaChasity Finley, one kill on 2-5 hitting and one dig.
Milbank Area hosted Northwestern Saturday, October 15, at the Milbank Armory and suffered a 3-0 loss to a solid Class B school. The Lady Bulldogs fell 25-14 in the first set, 25-8 in the second and 26-24 in the third.
Mielitz led the locals with 12 kills on 29-30 hitting, two assists on 6-6 setting, 5-7 serving, one block and 11 digs. Rick tallied four kills on 21-23 hitting, two aces on 10-10 serving, 7-7 setting, two blocks and 12 digs. M. Hoeke contributed two kills on 9-9 hitting, one ace on 7-8 serving, 18 assists on 50-50 setting, one block and 16 digs.
Schuelke went 24-24 setting with three assists and eight digs. Schulte was 4-4 serving, 3-3 setting and had three digs while Lightfield was 7-7 serving and had six digs. J. Hoeke added one kill on 3-5 hitting, 4-4 setting and one dig with Engebretson going 8-9 hitting with three kills, 6-7 serving, 3-3 setting and four digs. Rounding out the team totals were Hilbrands, one kill on 3-5 hitting, one block and four digs, and Finley, one kill on 4-5 hitting, 9-9 setting and two digs.
Milbank Area will travel to Sisseton Tuesday, October 18, and will play host to Britton-Hecla Friday, October 21, when the seniors and their parents will be honored.
