_dsc0016-1The Milbank Area boys basketball team starts its season at Agency Village this Friday, December 9. The Bulldogs take on the Tiospa Zina Wambdi. The C game is set for 5:15 p.m. Junior varsity and varsity games follow.

Matt Bastian leads the Dawgs in his eleventh season as head coach. He will be assisted by Ryan Scoular, who begins his seventh season with the Bulldogs. Rick Swenson has returned as the C team coach.

According to Coach Bastien, “We had a number of underclassmen play last year, which makes things look positive for this season. We won’t be a big team, but should be fairly athletic with decent skill.” The Bulldogs plan to be competitive in the Northeast Conference this season, which continues to be one of the strongest conferences in Class A.

Six seniors lead the team. Returning to the squad are: Nate Bien, Matt Lenards, Tanner Gauer, Cody Dockter, and Riley Wollschlager. Matt Cornelius, also a senior, transferred to Milbank and joins the team this season.

Other players with significant varsity experience include juniors Jonny Ash, Mitch Quade, and Derrick Aho. Added to the varsity lineup, are juniors James Weber, Chandler Peery, and Preston Morton.

Players on the junior varsity and C team rosters include: Tate Stricherz, Kacen Huber, Nolan Hanson, Noah Pillatzki, Luke Wold, Riley Gauer, Jacob Sandvig, Jake Fox, Jordan Riley, Keaten Benson, Logan Paysen, Brady Femling, Evan Erickson, Noah Steinlicht, Sam Seffrood, Alex Schuelke, Max McCulloch, Adam Wollschlager, and Dom Reese.

Class A boys basketball also implemented the Sweet 16 tournament. As with girls basketball, the final two teams remaining from each region tournament advance to a Sweet 16 contest. The winners of those eight games advance to the state Class A basketball tournament scheduled for March 16-18 at the Premier Center in Sioux Falls.
