_dsc0020-7The Milbank Area Bulldogs defeated the Tiospa Zina Wambdi December 9, in Agency Village. It was the first game of their 2016-2017 high school boys basketball season.

Bulldog head coach Matt Bastian said, “I was happy for the guys to get a win. They worked really hard in practice leading up to this game, so it was great to see them get rewarded. We had a lot of unselfish play and moved the ball well.”

Milbank Area led 15-5 at the end of the first quarter. They maintained the lead at 25-19 heading into halftime. A huge third quarter by the Bulldogs widened the gap to 45-26. In the last quarter, Milbank Area poured in 20 points for a final score of 53-38.

Senior Matt Lenards led the Dawgs with 13 points, three rebounds, and one steal. Senior Cody Dockter followed with 10 points, nine rebounds, and one steal. Senior Nate Bien and junior Mitch Quade added eight points each. Bien also grabbed seven rebounds and Quade added four boards and one steal. Junior Jonny Ash contributed six points, three rebounds, and one steal. Junior James Weber had six points, eight rebounds, two assists, and one steal.

Also contributing to the Bulldogs’ victory, were: senior Riley Wollschlager, two points, two rebounds and one assist; Derrick Aho, two rebounds and three steals; Jake Fox, eight rebounds and one assist; and Preston Morton, one rebound.

Milbank Area hit 23 of 68 for 34 percent shooting from the field. The Dawgs were also 7 of 9 from the charity stripe for 78%. They won the game with 56 rebounds, 12 steals, and four assists. They committed 17 turnovers.

Tiospa Zina made 24% of its shots from the field – 12 of 50 attempts. The Wambdi ended the game with 34 rebounds, 11 steals, and 14 turnovers.

Milbank Area will travel to Sisseton Tuesday, December 13, for doubleheader basketball action. The first game begins at 4 p.m. The varsity boys game is scheduled for approximately 8 p.m.
