_dsc0021-6The Milbank Area Bulldogs suffered two losses this week and dropped to 1-2 on the season. The Dawgs suffered a 51-44 loss to Sisseton Tuesday, December 13, before falling 68-41 to Aberdeen Roncalli Thursday, December 15.

Milbank Area played a solid game the final three quarters against Sisseton, but its slow start led to their demise. The Dawgs trailed 16-4 at the end of the first quarter and struggled to overcome the early deficit. “We had a slow start to the game and had to battle back the entire game,” stated Bulldog head coach Matt Bastian.

The Bulldogs stayed right with the Redmen for the rest of the contest outscoring them by five points. Milbank Area remained behind at 25-17 at the midway mark and 39-31 heading into the final stanza. “The only quarter we lost was the first, which tells me we are right there with this very good Sisseton team,” noted Bastian. “I was really proud of how we kept battling out each possession. The one thing we will have to do as a team and coaches is find a way to pull these games out. I told the guys afterwards that they did everything we asked of them. They should be proud of themselves for that.”

Nate Bien led the Dawgs with 19 points, three rebounds and three steals. James Weber tallied seven points and four rebounds. Matt Lenards contributed five points, two rebounds and one steal while Derrick Aho added five points and one board.

Also contributing for Milbank Area were Cody Dockter, four points, three rebounds and a steal; Jonny Ash, two points, four rebounds and one blocked shot; Preston Morton, two points, one rebound and one steal; Riley Wollschlager, one rebound and one steal, and Jake Fox, one rebound.
The Bulldogs went 13 for 45 from the field for 29 percent shooting on the night. Milbank Area ended the game with 32 rebounds, nine steals, one blocked shot and 11 turnovers.

Sisseton made 38% of its shots from the field, hitting 21 of 55 attempts. The Redmen secured the win with 41 rebounds, eight steals, two assists, two blocked shots and nine turnovers.

Milbank Area hosted Aberdeen Roncalli Thursday, December 15, at the Milbank Armory and suffered a 68-41 loss.

Late in the opening quarter Bien drained two three-pointers to knot the score up at 14-14. The Dawgs finished the quarter trailing 19-16. Roncalli poured on the heat in the second period. The Cavaliers added 20 points to its total and put on a full-court press that began to take its toll on Milbank Area. The locals were behind 39-24 at the midway mark.

Roncalli’s defensively pressure continued into the second half. Milbank Area struggled to get into its offensive flow. They remained behind at 54-33 heading into the final stanza where they were unable to come back.

Bien led Milbank Area with 12 points and eight rebounds. Dockter also added 12 points and grabbed three boards. James Weber chipped in with seven points and one rebound while Jonny Ash had four points and two rebounds.

Also contributing to the totals for Milbank Area were Riley Wollschlager, two points and one assist; Derrick Aho, two points; Preston Morton, two points and two steals; Matt Lenards, six rebounds and three assists, and Mitch Quade, two rebounds and one assist.

The Bulldogs went 13 for 43 from the field for 30 percent shooting on the night. Milbank Area ended the game with 35 rebounds, eight steals, five assists and 18 turnovers.

Roncalli made 42 percent of its shots from the field, making 28 of 66 attempts. The Cavaliers won the contest with 37 rebounds, 15 steals and nine turnovers.

Milbank Area will travel to Toronto Tuesday, December 20, to take on Deubrook Area.
