_dsc0002-26The student council at St. Lawrence School challenged all preschool through sixth graders during a “This is How We Roll” toilet paper drive. The tissue will go to the Grant County Food Pantry.

“When deciding what type of donations we wanted, we discovered toilet paper is not covered by many programs,” explained student council advisor Susie Wendland. “The kids realized they would be able to help every person with this project, which was so touching.”

Mrs. Barb Thompson’s first-graders donated 18.5 rolls per student to win the contest. Because each class does not have the same number of students, totals were calculated using a per student count. Mrs. Thompson’s class was rewarded with an extra recess.

A school-wide total of 1,161 rolls were collected. The student council also earned money to purchase 250 additional rolls for a grand total of 1,411 rolls. “All the kids really step up and just give, give, give,” Wendland said.

The students also created a toilet paper tree which was decorated and displayed in the foyer of the school. Those rolls will also be donated to the pantry.

First grade student council members Macie Van Lith and Will Muellenbach collect donations.
