The Milbank Area Bulldogs battled Dawson-Boyd, MN, in the final game of the State Farm/S&D One Stop Basketball Shootout Thursday, December 29, at the Milbank Armory. The Dawgs fell 58-43 and evened their record to 3-3 on the season.
Milbank Area got out to a slow start and trailed 16-7 at the end of the opening quarter. The Bulldogs came charging back in the second quarter, played neck-and-neck with the opponent, but remained behind at 30-22 at the midway mark.
The Dawgs struggled again in the third quarter, putting up just seven points while Dawson-Boyd dropped in 15. Milbank Area trailed 45-29 heading into the final stanza. The locals once again played evenly with the opponent, outscoring them by one point, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit.
Jonny Ash led the Bulldogs with 14 points, three rebounds and one steal. Nate Bien followed closely with 12 points and four rebounds. Cody Dockter tallied nine points and six boards while James Weber added three points.
Also contributing to the totals for Milbank Area were Preston Morton, three points; Mitch Quade, two points, two rebounds and two assists; Riley Wollschlager, one rebound and one steal; Matt Lenards, two rebounds and one steal, and Derrick Aho, one steal.
Milbank Area went 16-for-47 from the field for 34 percent shooting in the contest. The Bulldogs finished the game with 22 rebounds, four steals, two assists and three turnovers.
Dawson-Boyd made 55 percent of its shots on the night, hitting 23 of 42 attempts. The opponent secured the victory with 30 rebounds, two steals, one assist, one blocked shot and six turnovers.
Milbank Area will play host to the Deuel Cardinals Tuesday, January 3, in double header basketball action at the Milbank Armory.
