The sophomore class at Milbank High School is sponsoring a penny war to raise money for three charities – The Make-A-Wish Foundation, 65 Roses, and Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. The penny war will run from January 9, until January 20. The penny buckets are on display in the Milbank High School office during regular school hours and the school lobby during home basketball games.
“Each penny is a vote or a point for that organization,” explained MHS teacher Laura Maag. “Any other money in the bucket will be a point against the organization. The organization with the most points will receive 50% of the money raised by the penny war. The other two organizations each receive 25% of the money raised.”
The Make-A-Wish Foundation helps children with life threatening medical conditions find renewed strength and courage by seeing their wishes come true. 65 Roses, through its support of research, has greatly lengthened the life expectancy of people living with Cystic Fibrosis. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) is a national childhood cancer foundation dedicated to raising funds for research into new treatments and cures for children battling cancer.
