Gene Lyle Olson was born on October 15, 1927, on a farm in rural Nassau, Minnesota to Arthur and Rose (Zadow) Olson. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Nassau. On September 21, 1949, Gene was united in marriage with Mary Lou Dorneman. To this union four children were born.
Gene was a farmer and a carpenter. Gene and Mary Lou farmed outside of Ortonville until 1969, at which time they sold the farm and moved to a home he built near Ortonville. Gene was partner in the Andreasen and Olson Construction Company. In 1972, Gene and his son, Doug, formed Olson Construction.
Gene was a member of First English Lutheran Church where he served as usher. He was also a member of the Rod and Gun Club of Odessa. While a farmer, he served on the Nassau Elevator Board. Gene liked to hunt, fish, camp, garden, and play cards. He especially loved the time he spent with his grandchildren. In his younger years he played softball. His keen sense of humor created many fond memories for his family, including some crazy Halloween costumes and dancing the bunny hop through the kitchen, living room, and dining room!
In 2010, Gene began dialysis and greatly enjoyed the friendships he made while receiving treatment. In December of 2014, Gene moved to Northridge Residence, where he liked to play bingo and shake dice. He appreciated the friendships he formed with his caregivers.
Left with his loving memory is his wife, Mary Lou of Ortonville; children: Linda Olson (Don Ritter) of Greene, IA; Doug (Jan) Olson of Bellingham, MN; Trish Collins of Ortonville, MN; and Todd Olson (Brenda Hermann) of Bellingham, MN; four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and six step great-grandchildren; and brother Wayne Olson of Milton, FL.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Orville and Mylo; sisters Pearl and Mildred; sister-in-law Betty Olson; and brothers-in-law Ervin Nelson and Bernard Peterson.
In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates gifts to the Ortonville Dialysis Unit, Northridge Residence, or Rice Hospice.
