Dean O’Farrell, age 85 of Marvin died January 19, 2017, at his residence.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, January 24 at 10:30 a.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank. Rev. John Hostettler will officiate.
Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday from 5 – 7 p.m. and continue Tuesday morning, one hour prior to the service. Music will be provided by Tim Mundwiler.
Military honors will be presented by American Legion, Birch-Miller Post #9, V.F.W. Grant County Post #3486, V.V.A. Northeast SD Chapter #1054, and D.A.V. Chapter #19.
Dean Wesley O’Farrell was born April 21, 1931, in Marvin, SD. He was the son of Alvin and Amanda (Olson) O’Farrell. He attended rural school at Osceola #1 through the eighth grade. Dean worked on the family farm until serving in the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge, Dean returned to South Dakota and resumed farming. He was united in marriage with Marlene Westphal. They were blessed with two children, Vicky and Randy.
Dean drove milk truck for Mid Am Dairy. He moved to California and drove truck hauling logs. He was united in marriage with Esther Kasuske on July 16, 1976, in Las Vegas, NV. The couple returned to South Dakota and built a home in Marvin in 1994, and have since resided. Esther died on July 24, 2005.
Dean and Esther enjoyed a good life together. They enjoyed going to the Casino and took great pride in their yard and gardens. Dean loved people and enjoyed visiting and spending time with his buddies at the Marvin Bar. He had a great love for trucks and cars. He also enjoyed fishing.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Vicky (Chip) Hedge of Milbank, SD; Randy O’Farrell of Rancho Mirage, CA; step-daughter, Janie (John) Humble of Grand Junction, CO; brothers: Larry (Pat) O’Farrell of Marvin, SD; Raymond (Vicky) O’Farrell of Marvin, SD; Terry O’Farrell of Watertown, SD; Bill (Joyleen) O’Farrell of Milbank, SD; sisters: Ellen Hudson of Big Stone City, SD; Mary (Bob) Chapin of Irving, TX; Caroline Ammann of Wilmot, SD; Doris (Harry) Slinden of Sioux Falls, SD; Linda Roberts of Irving, TX; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one great-great-grandchild.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, wife Esther, brothers: Dick, Jack, Jim and one grandson, Jason.
